GTA 6 has no online mode at launch
Take-Two's own pre-order announcement calls it a single-player experience. Nothing has been announced about an online mode arriving later.
Grand Theft Auto VI launches as a single-player experience. That is Take-Two's own phrasing, from the press release announcing pre-orders: the game "features a single-player experience set in the biggest, most immersive evolution of the series yet." No online mode, no co-op and no shared free roam has been announced for launch.
GTA Online launched roughly two weeks after GTA 5 and has been central to the series since.
What is confirmed
- Take-Two describes the game as featuring a single-player experience
- No online, multiplayer or co-op component has been announced for November 19
- Nothing has been said about crossplay, and with no announced online mode there is nothing for it to apply to
- GTA Online is still receiving content: Rockstar added the Kortz Center Heist in July 2026, with new vehicles and events published since, most recently in September 2026
What is not confirmed
As of 24 September 2026, no date, name, pricing structure or feature list for a future online mode appears in any Rockstar or Take-Two statement we can find, and Rockstar has not explained the single-player launch.
Rockstar's previous releases followed a pattern, though it guarantees nothing here:
- GTA 5 shipped September 2013; GTA Online followed about two weeks later as a free update
- Red Dead Redemption 2 shipped October 2018; Red Dead Online entered beta about a month later
Both times the campaign had a window to itself first. Whether GTA 6 follows that pattern is unknown.
What it changes at launch
If you were planning to play with friends in the new game on day one, that is not an option. November 19 is a story campaign.
For completion, launch week is entirely single-player: collectibles, side activities and whatever else is in Leonida. See what Rockstar has stated about the map for how little is known in advance. Our interactive map is built for tracking it.
Common questions
Does GTA 6 have multiplayer at launch?
No. Take-Two's pre-order announcement describes GTA 6 as featuring a single-player experience, and no online or multiplayer component has been announced for launch.
Will GTA 6 get an online mode later?
Nothing has been announced. GTA Online followed GTA 5 by about two weeks and Red Dead Online followed RDR2 by about a month, but Rockstar has confirmed no date, format, or pricing.
Is GTA Online shutting down?
There is no sign of it. Rockstar was still publishing new GTA Online content in September 2026, including a new heist added in July and new vehicles and events since.
Does GTA 6 have crossplay?
No online mode has been announced for launch, so there is nothing to cross-play. Rockstar has not shipped crossplay on its previous online modes either.
